Reading the classics

As part of #oxfamreadingchallenge I am reading a classic for April. The one I have chosen is Black Beauty and I am really enjoying it. So I have decided to try and read one a month. I have Anne of Green Gables and Wuthering Heights lined up so watch this space to see how I get on with them.

I took my classic out for a walk today as it was such a beautiful day. After I had walked for a whole 5 mins I got a cup of tea and sat by the Shannon to read. A lovely man stopped me to say how he never sees people reading classics anymore and it was so lovely to see it. We had such a wonderful chat about books which rarely happens anymore. It was so refreshing not to talk about the weather or the daily grind of everyday life. It made me want to pursue this blog even more.

I know we were all forced to read classics in school but the pressure and the way we read them (analysing every word spoken) took the enjoyment out of them. So it's nice to go back and read them for my own pleasure and at my own pace.

How do you feel about classics? Do you have any favourites? Are there any particular ones you feel I should read or stay away from?

Is anyone else taking part in this?
